Jai Gurudev and Happy Radhashtami!
May the Grace of Srimati Radharani awaken inside of your heart!
Radha, like we have heard so many times, is not just a normal name, you know. Because Radharani Herself controls Krishna. Krishna controls the whole universe. And Radha controls Him! How do you say it: the man might be the head, but the woman is the neck. So, Radharani is that neck. She controls the Lord of the universe. Who among you can do that? None of you! Because that bhakti is not yet there.
When bhakti has no flaw, then Radha is there. Because in Srimati Radharani there is no flaw towards Krishna. It doesn’t matter how Krishna is, but Her longing for Krishna, Her devotion to Krishna, Her Love for Krishna, that’s the highest.
Everybody would like to control somebody. This is a nature of human being. You like to be in control of everything, but who can control the Lord Himself? Not only Srimati Radharani, but also all the saints have had that. Because Radha has awakened within them. Their bhakti is not flickering; their bhakti has no flaw in it. When bhakti has no flaw, then Radha is there. Because in Srimati Radharani there is no flaw towards Krishna. It doesn’t matter how Krishna is, but Her longing for Krishna, Her devotion to Krishna, Her Love for Krishna, that’s the highest. And yet, people try to love. They would like to love like this, but it’s not possible. Why it is not possible? Because you still retain your ideas about what is love. You still want to love the way you want, ‘I, I, I, my, my, mine’, you know. You still want to control everything...
When the mind becomes single-pointed, there is no diversion, there is no flickering. That mind longs for the aim. And what is that aim? That aim is Bhagavan Himself, Narayana Krishna.
We praise the gopis, for example. Even if they were doing everything, you know, their minds were on Krishna. They were clear. Because Bhagavan didn’t say that you should not have a family life or you should not have your job. Very often spiritual people think like that. No, you should do all your duties, but make Him part in everything that you are doing. And that is Radha. When the mind becomes single-pointed, there is no diversion, there is no flickering. That mind longs for the aim. And what is that aim? That aim is Bhagavan Himself, Narayana Krishna. (You can name Him many names, all are His.) When that aim becomes clear, then Radha says, ‘Okay, that person deserves more.’ If She awakens inside of you the longing for the Lord, but yet, your mind is still running left, right, how would you handle that? Tell me! Difficult, no? So, when that mind becomes fixed upon the Supreme Lord Himself, Giridhariji, then that bhav, that longing, will awaken. And when that longing awakens, don’t think that that longing will finish. Very often, when people go on the spiritual path at the beginning, they are very excited. People look for enthusiasm and excitement.
Earlier I was listening to Kailashananda talking [during Darshan]. He was saying how his mind was diverted and how he fixed that. But how do you think that happened? Automatically just like that? No! It is he who willingly wanted it. If he didn’t want it, then of course, it would never have happened. And this is the Grace of Srimati Radharani when it awakens.
Aradhana means not only sadhana, not just prayer, but it is with which mood you are doing it; that longing.
That’s why in the Shreemad Bhagavatam She is referred to as Aradhana. Aradhana means not only sadhana, not just prayer, but it is with which mood you are doing it; that longing. It’s not just doing it mechanically and finish. There is also that deep longing for Him. That is Radharani’s Grace.
The Story of Sridhama
We were singing ‘Radhe Radhe’. There is this beautiful story before they incarnated on Earth, before Srimati Radharani manifested here. Radha and Krishna, of course, like all the avatars, are eternal; there is not a moment that they never existed. So, there was one devotee of Krishna, Sridhama. (Not Sudhama, Sridhama.) Sridhama had such a great devotion for Krishna that he became a fanatic. For him there was only Krishna, nobody else, not even Radha, even without knowing who Srimati Radharani was. In every way he tried to challenge and prove that. ’Why you are singing Radha’s Name?’ In his devotion to Krishna, he became so high, so elevated, that at one point he missed recognising who Radha was.
He went once to Goloka and saw Radha and Krishna. Everyone was doing the arati to Radha and Krishna, and of course, all the devotees of Srimati Radharani were singing, ‘Radhe, Radhe, Radhe, Radhe’, you know. He became very angry and he said, 'Why are you singing "Radhe, Radhe"? You should sing "Krishna, Krishna"!'
They didn’t; they ignored him.
After the arati, he challenged Radha and he said this. Because of his devotion to Krishna, of course, Krishna could not do anything to him and could not say anything, so Krishna kept quiet. Because you see, He knew why He was quiet also.
Sridhama challenged Radharani and said, ‘Okay, if your power is so great, we will see.’ So, there was a butterfly flying around and he told all the devotees of Srimati Radharani to say, ‘Radhe, Radhe’. So, of course, they said, ‘Radhe, Radhe’, and when they said ‘Radhe, Radhe,’ the poor butterfly just burned to ashes. Then he said, ‘You see what happened? Because She is Maya, because of Her Maya that butterfly has burned!’
Then there was a bird flying around. Again, he said, ‘Look at the bird, say, “Radhe, Radhe”.’ So, they all said, ‘Radhe, Radhe’ and the bird burned also. He was shocked. They all got scared. Doubt started jumping into their minds, ‘What if he is really telling the truth?’ You know how quickly the mind can be poisoned. Then there was a small girl who came and that little girl said, ‘Please, say “Radhe, Radhe”.’ Nobody dared to say, ‘Radhe, Radhe’. What would happen to this poor girl?!
Radharani is Prem, that supreme bliss.
Meanwhile Krishna left, because the discussion was getting too hot, you know! Krishna said, ‘Okay, I can’t side with either My bhakta’s side, because My bhakta has bhakti inside, or with Radharani, who has Prem inside.’ Radharani is Prem, that supreme bliss. And bhakti is also there. The bhakta has bhakti inside, you know. So, they were fighting these two. (Radharani was not fighting, but that bhakta was fighting.) So, finally the Lord said, ‘I need some time to reflect on which one of you is really the most important. Give Me some time.’ Then, He went to His place and He said to Sridhama, ‘You wait here in front of the door. Don’t let anybody inside.’ You see, Sridhama, through his bhakti, had great power inside of him.
When Lord Krishna was inside, He called for Radha. Of course, nobody could hear that. He didn’t say, ‘Radhaaaaa!’, so that everybody could hear. No, inside His heart He called for Radharani. Meanwhile, Radharani was sitting there in front of that little girl. The little girl said, ‘Why has everybody left? Why are You sitting alone? Why have they stopped singing “Radhe, Radhe”?’ Radha was thinking of Krishna. At the same time, Krishna called for Radha from within Her. That pull to Krishna was so strong that Radha started running towards Krishna.
When arriving at the door, of course, Sridhama was in front of that door and didn’t allow Radharani to enter.
Radha said, ‘But My Lord is calling Me!’
And Sridhama said, ‘I don't hear anything. How can you say that He is calling You? Normally if somebody calls, either you will hear it or there will be a letter or something. Show me!’
She said, ‘He didn’t call Me verbally outside, but inside He is calling Me.’
Then he said, ‘I will not let You inside because this is Your Maya. Your Maya is controlling the Lord Himself! So, I will not let You inside.’
Radha said, ‘No, don’t stop Me because I can’t. It’s too strong. It’s like a magnet is pulling Me. I can’t resist.’
Then again he got very angry and he cursed Radha. He said, ‘You will be born on Earth, but You will forget who You are for 100 years.’
Because of his bhakti, through that power that he had inside, of course, Radharani accepted it. Because he is a bhakta and the Lord will always accept a bhakta. Srimati Radharani also. Even if it is hard. Even when Sridhama threw that curse, and Radharani said, ‘What have you done?’, he was still proud.
Then the devotees of Srimati Radharani realised their mistake by listening to Sridhama. They realised by analysing what happened by chanting ‘Radhe, Radhe’. That butterfly was the same as the bird. Through chanting of Radha’s Naam, you see, that butterfly was liberated. The butterfly became the bird... And then there was such a big jump to a girl. That little girl was there also and the little girl spoke and said, ‘Sridhama, you were blaming Radharani, and you just cursed Radharani, but you don’t even know what you have done. I’m telling you I was that butterfly, I was that bird, and I am in this form as this little girl.’
Realising his mistake, he started to think, ‘It’s true.’ Listening to that little girl, he came to his senses, his anger calmed down and he realised what he had done: he had cursed Radha to be away from Krishna, to incarnate on Earth, and also to forget who She was. So, he implored the mercy of Srimati Radharani. At that moment Lord Krishna came out. And of course, all this was His plan, you know. He had to find an excuse for Him to come down, so that’s why He sent Srimati Radharani first. And that is also why that curse made Her forget who She was, because if She remembered who She was, then He could not do His Leela! He could not do all His mischiefs, He could not do all that He had to come to do. So Srimati Radharani accepted it. And meanwhile they all chanted ‘Radhe, Radhe, Radhe, Radhe’, so that little girl was freed. That little girl said, ‘Just by hearing Srimati Radharani’s Name, I have gone through 8.4 million lives so quickly. I have been freed.’
That little girl said, just by hearing Srimati Radharani’s Name, I have gone through 8.4 million lives so quickly. I have been freed.
Then Radharani incarnated in Barsana, waiting for Bhagavan to manifest Himself. Then you know the story.
You see, the Name of Sri Radha is the longing for Giridhariji. That’s why I always say, when you chant Radha’s Name, it reflects upon your Anahata Chakra: the heart chakra. And it is only when that heart longs for the Lord that He can reveal Himself. If a devotee doesn’t have that longing and is just going with their mind…that’s why Kailashananda was saying knowledge is very important: to understand. Of course, you understand with the mind, but you have to know what is happening, otherwise you become crazy.
There are so many people who don’t understand what is happening. They just think, ‘Okay, ‘Oooh, I love God!’ But it’s empty. Then they become paranoid; they become mad. You can see them when they go walk around; they walk as if they are not present in their body anymore. The saints sometimes also walk like this, but they are full; they are full of bliss. On whoever comes close to a saint, that bliss drenches upon them also; they get soaked in that bliss.
And for the paranoid people, they attract each other and they always sit close to each other and they entertain their paranoia together. It sounds funny, but you know what I have to go through?! They think that they are always very high and they always have to sit in front. Sometimes I have to chase them to go to the back!
You have to truly understand what this longing is, and what this is when a saint says to love God. Not just superficially love God, ‘Oh, yes, I love God’. The whole world says, yes, they love God (if they believe in God, anyway). But truly to love Him is to know Him; your mind is saturated with His sweetness. And how would you do that? It’s only when you have the right knowledge, when you educate yourself. That’s why education is very important, so that that mind, which Lord Krishna said is your enemy, can become your best friend. That limited mind can become Divine with the sweetness of Bhagavan Himself. And it is through the Grace of Srimati Radharani that this longing awakens inside.
That limited mind can become Divine with the sweetness of Bhagavan Himself. And it is through the Grace of Srimati Radharani that this longing awakens inside.
So, this is not just a day that we celebrate Radhashtami and when She appeared, or She descended, but we have to really ask Her for that Grace so that She awakens inside of us, and that She graces each one to long for Him.
That’s why in Vrindavan, there is no Vrindavaneshwar. Have you ever heard of Vrindavaneshwar? No, it doesn’t exist. But Vrindavani exists, Vrindeshwari exists. That’s why wherever you go in Vrindavan you will hear ‘Radhe, Radhe’ everywhere so that constantly it’s reminded that all must long the same way Srimati Radharani longs for Bhagavan. And this is the real dharma, you know. Everybody asks, ‘Guruji, tell me my dharma.’ You write on a little paper, ‘What is my purpose of life here?’ You really want to know? No, you don’t want to know your real purpose of life. You like to hear fancy things. If I tell you a fancy story, you would be happy. But really your true dharma is to attain Bhagavan; to attain Him, nothing else. And in life you should try your best to attain Him, because this life is partial. How long will you live? People are dying like flies nowadays. You hear that somebody is fine, and the next moment you hear that cancer has attacked him or her. Or you hear that a person was fine and all of a sudden that person had a heart attack and died, finish! Life: what is it? What’s the purpose of life? What have you realised? Just to entertain your half hour of happiness? Then after that, what?
So, when you are chanting ‘Radhe, Radhe’, you say ‘Radhe, Radhe’, but also there is ‘Shyam Milade’. ‘Radhe, Radhe, Shyam Milade’, so when you chant ‘Radhe, Radhe’ you will meet Krishna. This is very important, you know: the aim is Bhagavan Himself. So, make it clear what you really want as a bhakta, as a devotee. If that is clear in your mind, trust; trust that He will look after you, He will carry you. Trust doesn’t mean you stop doing what you are doing. No, you do, but know that He is with you.
Jai Gurudev, everyone! Jai Sri Radhe
