Kartik Night with Paramahamsa Vishwananda
Shree Peetha Nilaya, 02 November 2019
Paramahamsa Vishwananda began the eagerly-awaited Kartik celebration on Saturday evening, and after everyone had danced the whole night through, He concluded it the next morning with this inspiring message for everyone.
I wish you all a blessed Kartik!
Kartik is not only today; it is the whole month until 21 November. So, every day you can light a small lamp in front of Krishna and do your worship at home.
They have explained about Kartik earlier. In this month, there are many Lilas that Lord Krishna performed. One of the most important of all the Lilas is the Ras Lila. Then you have Govardhan, then you have Damodara Lila and Naraksura Mardhana Lila and so on, you know. All the Lilas fall into this month. So, this month is a very blessed month. You have Diwali also, Navaratri just finished, Ganesh Chaturthi and so on. You see how blessed this month is!
If your mind is fully absorbed in thinking and meditating upon the Lila of the Lord, your mind will transform. So, in this month you should keep your mind on your japam, intensify your japam and let your mind be transformed, because the punya you receive during this month is much stronger. This month is very dear to Sriman Narayana, to Krishna. That’s why we spent this night dancing and remembering Him; the same for Shivaratri: so that the mind can be conquered. Only when your mind is conquered can you really feel His Love. If your mind is still the same, you can’t feel Him. You will never get to know Him.
So, that mind is what Krishna said throughout the Bhagavad Gita: that mind itself must change and transform. Why? Not for His sake, but for your sake. Because deep inside there is this yearning and longing. Maybe you are not aware of it, but if you look at those who meditate and have the glimpse of the Atma itself, you will see the Atma longs only for Bhagavan. It doesn’t long for anything else. But how would you understand that? Only when your mind is transformed. And the mind transforms in many ways. Because the mind runs always towards the outside and the mind always makes you see only a certain limitation of things. You don’t comprehend. You think you are comprehending everything, you think you are understanding everything, but all this understanding is still limited by the concept of the outside, no? So, you really understand only when that mind is challenged throughout, you see.
Like tonight: your mind has been challenged, because you have stayed whole night, no? You have forced yourself to stay the whole night. This is also a challenge of the mind. So, the mind can’t wander around. Maybe you are thinking, ‘Yes, I’m falling asleep’, ‘When will this finish?’ and ‘When will I go to sleep?’ But yet, with the bhajan, kirtan, with the chanting of the Divine Name and dancing and moving around, you have kept your mind active. But it was not running towards the outside, it was running towards the dancing; you were chanting, singing the Divine Name, singing bhajans, kirtan. That mind has been challenged, and you have met that challenge, actually, by staying awake.
Happy Kartik! May Giridhari bless you all!
