Day 11 - Wholehearted Devotion
Following the Master | Mauritius Pilgrimage 2021
17 March 2021
On the final day of this incredible inner journey with our beloved Gurudev, the energy in the air was palpable with the knowledge that this chapter was coming to an end. During the morning abhishekam, we sang bhajans for Holi, as we originally would’ve celebrated on that day. Giridhari was brought to the centre of the room and everyone danced in a circle around Him with unhindered joy, resembling our own little rasa-lila! Guruji later joined in and kept us all dancing!
As He shared His final satsang, many tears flowed amongst devotees. With the grace of satsang after satsang, it's only right that the conclusion was the essentiality of guru-bhakti - the practice of devotion to the guru. But what Guruji emphasized was not just any devoted behaviour, but the importance of wholehearted devotion.
The guru doesn’t want half-hearted devotion. He wants wholehearted devotion, because He has given Himself fully to the service of humanity, to the service of each individual.
He explained what guru-bhakti is, what it means to really surrender, which attitude we must have when serving, and what it is we can truly do in order to put this into action.
Of the many insights, daily worship to the guru’s feet, following the exact word of the Master’s personalized instructions, the attitude of humility, purity of heart through meditation, and constant absorption in the guru’s teachings were highlighted.
He elaborated on guru-bhakti through the life of Bahinabai among many other stories. As He was concluding, He revealed the three simple things one must do to grow in guru-bhakti:
How to put all of this into practice is part of the mystery of constant worship and focus on, not just any guru, but your one and only satguru.
The path of service to the guru, guru-bhakti, is the perfection of all the yogas.
At the evening darshan, many devotees had the opportunity to sing, especially during the group chorus organized for Guruji. Guruji had a smile on His face while watching the many devotees expressing their love through song.
Swami Paranthapa spoke with his unique, graceful candor, uplifting and praising this time we have just been blessed with. If there is one thing we must remember, he said, it is that we are extensions of our satguru. We can be contributors of change in the world by doing the work to embody this grace and through reverence to this fact:
The Love that He is, is expressing itself through us.
It is now our opportunity to assimilate what we’ve learned, let it transform us, and offer it all towards the mission of our beloved Gurudev, for the greater good of all humanity.
