# 5 | Maha Ranganath Abhishekam
Following the Master | Mauritius 2020-21
01 January 2021
Every word of Krishna is like a song, every step is like a dance.
During the New Year’s Eve celebrations, after hours of dancing and singing together, Guruji called Paramjyoti to share a tea with him. Guruji asked him if he had any wishes for 2021. Paramjyoti said no, he didn’t have any wishes.
Guruji persisted and asked again. Eventually, Paramjyoti said ‘If I could make a wish it would be that we could continue dancing and singing together.’ Their conversation shifted topics until Guruji invited him to the prayer room to pray. Paramjyoti knew that this prayer room was like a wish-fulfilling tree. It’s said that every prayer offered in that room is answered and so everyone must watch their mind closely. Even though Paramjyoti doesn’t consider himself to be a yogi who can meditate, he could feel that the energy in the room was different.
Guruji and Paramjyoti meditated for a while and when he opened his eyes, Guruji came, embraced him and lifted him up. Immediately Paramjyoti turned around and gave him a new year's hug. Guruji took his hand and put it on his chest. At that moment, Paramjyoti remembered he had wanted to see Guruji materialize a deity and had been thinking about that while they were meditating. With his hand on Guruji’s chest, Paramjyoti could feel something solid and His heart beating like crazy. Guruji was breathing heavily. Soon after, He put His hand under His shirt and pulled out a small murti of Krishna dancing on the head of Kaliya. Paramjyoti was shocked. He didn't ask for anything like that. He had just asked to dance with Him, just to do kirtan with Him.
When He gave it to Paramjyoti, the murti was hot as a hot cup of tea. Paramjyoti was shocked but tried to appreciate the moment. He wanted to inhale the atmosphere. He knew, he wasn’t so disciplined with his sadhana but knew now that he had something to care for. Guruji said ‘Now, I gave a piece of my heart to you. You take proper care!’
The following morning New Year’s Day celebrations took place full swing. Everyone felt a bit wrinkled when we got up. Guruji had tea and the rest of us had a coffee to help get us started - at least that’s how we perceived it, knowing that Guruji is just fine with very little or even no sleep at all. Like every day with Guruji, our first mission was to serve the Lord so we went to the temple where Sri Ranganath was ready for His abhishekam.
The puja lasted for many hours because Guruji involved most of the Mauritian men in serving the deities. Painting and dressing Sri Ranganath alone lasted until well after midday accompanied by the lasting energy of the kirtan.
Later in the day the head of a neighbouring temple - the Sanatana Dharma Temple - gave a beautiful talk. He pointed out that the devotion that can be felt in the temple was unique and it was all because of Guruji’s devotion. He told us that generally prayers and festivities would finish by noon at the latest but here we were well past mid-day and the ceremonies continued in full swing.
We sang more bhajans until Guruji sat down in His asana to give the New Year’s talk. He told us that being happy is the most important thing as happiness is the source of life itself. There is so much separation in the world and there should be more unity again - including within ourselves. This can all be achieved with knowledge of the soul - otherwise, we would be no different than animals. Intuition is the guide that we should learn to listen to. We should become like someone who knows about the music before going to the concert to appreciate it more. He also gave an analogy of a car engine - the fuel can only make the motor work through ignition. Spirituality is about growing into the path, not about getting something quickly, quickly.
In His satsang he mentioned that people often think of 2020 as a terrible year but it wasn’t. It was a year that gave everyone time to reflect upon life and what is most important to them. Life is here today. You don’t know what is in the next five minutes. Go to sleep each night with the hope you wake up tomorrow. That way you have to embrace life because life is a celebration. Each moment of your life is unique. Each moment you can learn something new. Each moment you are growing, not older, but inwardly. You have to grow in maturity and dive into yourself.
